Cycling for a Cause: Tom Taylor’s Journey Across Africa

South Africa

At 71 years old, Thomas Taylor embarked on a journey like no other, cycling across Africa to raise awareness and critical funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Africa (BGCSA). After losing his beloved wife Thokozile, a South African nurse, in 2021, Tom turned to cycle touring to heal and honor her memory. What began with a ride across the U.S. evolved into an epic trek from Nairobi, Kenya, through Tanzania and Zambia, and into Johannesburg, each mile dedicated to supporting children and teens in South African communities.

Tom’s passion for youth mentorship led him to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Africa (BGCSA) after meeting one of the organizations’ executives. The executive shared the profound impact of BGCSA’s work and extended an invitation for Tom to get involved. Moved by the organization’s mission and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference, Tom committed to shining a spotlight on BGCSA’s life-changing efforts and encouraging others to join the cause.

Throughout his journey, Tom faced treacherous terrain and unexpected challenges, including a memorable run-in with a tuk-tuk taxi in Tanzania. Still, he pressed on with unwavering determination. He celebrated his 72nd birthday on March 3, 2025, while mid-trek, and officially completed his cycling tour on March 28, 2025.

“I find it motivating belonging to a fading generation and helping to give hope and opportunity to rising generations,” Tom shared.

Tom’s ride may be complete, but the impact of his efforts continues. His journey brought global attention to BGCSA’s mission to create safe, empowering spaces for youth across South Africa.
