Dare to Be You: Empowering Young Women

Greater Manchester, UK

In the heart of Oldham, Greater Manchester, UK, a transformative journey unfolded for a group of young women through the “Dare to Be You” project—an eight-week course aimed at nurturing self-worth, resilience, and empowerment. Delivered by Fullcircle NW CIC and supported by Great Places Housing and The National Lottery Community Fund, the program offered a safe space for participants to explore their identities, develop confidence, and celebrate individuality. “The Dare to Be You project is about empowering young women to believe in themselves, embrace their individuality, and become the best versions of themselves," said Leanne Murphy, Project Lead. Culminating in a powerful celebration at Fullcircle’s Youth Club, the event brought together families, local partners like Saprea, and community leaders to honor the growth of the young women involved.

Throughout the course, the girls engaged in hands-on workshops on topics such as self-expression, basic makeup techniques, and the meaning of being authentically themselves. Influential speakers like MUA entrepreneur Leanne Murphy, Great Places’ Leanne Keanne, and Oldham Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah inspired attendees with messages of resilience and the importance of local youth support systems. Becci Drake, Director at Fullcircle NW CIC and lead youth worker on this project, said: “The 'Dare to Be You' project is a shining example of how we can equip young people with the skills and confidence they need to thrive.” Fullcircle was set up 14 years ago with a core mission to help people learn, grow, and give back. Their stories resonated with the project’s core message: when young women are empowered to embrace their strengths and voices, their futures shine brighter.

As a proud supporter of youth-focused initiatives across the UK and beyond, World Youth Clubs, alongside its affiliate Saprea, applauds the “Dare to Be You” project for its dedication to positive youth development. The final event’s heartfelt certificate ceremony, complete with gifts from Younique, reminded everyone present that believing in oneself is the first step toward lasting change. “The ‘Dare to Be You’ project is a shining example of the difference local youth clubs make in young lives,” said Andy Hamill of the National Association of Boys & Girls Clubs. In a world that often pressures young people to conform, programs like this help them discover the courage to be exactly who they are.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the participants, Fullcircle NW CIC, Great Places Housing, The National Lottery Community Fund, Leanne Murphy, Leanne Keanne, Cllr Arooj Shah, Becci Drake, Saprea, Younique, the National Association of Boys & Girls Clubs, Andy Hamill, and the families and community leaders who made the 'Dare to Be You' project possible, creating a ripple effect of empowerment that will continue to inspire young women in Oldham and beyond to embrace their authentic selves with confidence and courage.

YOU can empower youth and change the world.
