The Boss Meets Salford: WYC Creates Unforgettable Experience
Young Lives Changed Forever: Bruce Springsteen MeetsSalford Lads and Girls Club Through World Youth Clubs Partnership
In a remarkable moment that will be cherished for years to come, World Youth Clubs recently facilitated an unforgettable experience for young members of Salford Lads and Girls Club, a WYC affiliate, during Bruce Springsteen's Land of Hope & Dreams Tour in Manchester. This extraordinary opportunity came through a special connection – a friendship spanning nearly four decades between Patti Springsteen and Susan Porcaro Goings, with Rick Goings and Susan Porcaro Goings serving as Chairman and Founders of World Youth Clubs.
A Dream Becomes Reality
On May17, 2025, a group of fifteen excited young people from Salford Lads and GirlsClub, a WYC affiliate, and Your Music CIC were given the opportunity of a lifetime – tickets to see Bruce Springsteen at Manchester's Co-Op Live arena, backstage access, and an intimate meeting with "The Boss" himselfjust 30 minutes before he took to the stage.
Rick Goings and Susan Porcaro Goings, founders of World Youth Clubs, personally accompanied the young people and their chaperones to ensure this would be an experience they'd never forget. "Rick and I had the privilege of accompanying 15 young people and their chaperones from the Salford Lads Club in Manchester, England—one of our World Youth Clubs Affiliates—to a BruceSpringsteen concert," Susan shared. "Thanks to Patti, Bruce's wife and my dear friend of almost 40 years, these young people were treated to an unforgettable VIP experience."
For many of these young people, this wasn't just an exciting evening – it was their very first live concert experience. The opportunity arose through the collaboration between World Youth Clubs and the National Association of Boys and Girls Clubs, who are working together to connect youth organizations globally and create transformative cultural experiences.
The VIP Experience
The evening was truly extraordinary from start to finish. Susan described the fullVIP treatment: "From backstage passes and time in the E Street Lounge toSpringsteen-branded totes filled with hats and t-shirts, the group was given an extraordinary glimpse behind the scenes. Their seats were right next to the stage—but the highlight of the night was still to come."
While music plays a significant role in many young people's lives, the prohibitive cost of live events often creates substantial barriers to participation. This partnership between World Youth Clubs and the National Association of Boys andGirls Clubs aims to break down these barriers, making these formative experiences accessible to young people regardless of their financial circumstances.
A Personal Connection with The Boss
The most profound moment of the evening came when Bruce Springsteen himself took time to personally connect with each young person. "Just before the concert began, Bruce took the time to personally greet everyone," Susan recalled."He shook hands, asked names, and listened to each young person's story. Watching their faces light up as they interacted with him was incredibly moving. It was a moment that created lifelong memories—for them, and for us."
Among the young attendees was 15-year-old singer-songwriter John Denton, who had the special honor of presenting Bruce with a World Youth Clubs and Salford LadsClub T-shirt along with a CD of his own original music.
"I got my grandad to print off a CD of four of my own songs to give toBruce," John shared afterward. "I said 'hello I'm John' and he said'Hi John, I'm Bruce,' which was quite funny. That was the longest half hour of my life waiting to meet him."
John's father Phil noted that his son went to the event thinking it was "just another gig" but was "mind-blown" after his conversation with the superstar. The young musician even had an unexpected bonus encounter with U2 guitarist The Edge in the venue's bar, to whom he gave another copy of his music.
The Power of Partnerships
Andy Hamill, National Director of National Association of Boys & Girls Clubs and a Mission Advancement Advisor for World Youth Clubs in the UK, emphasized the significance of the collaborative effort that made this experience possible:
"It was truly a memorable night. But it also demonstrated the power of well-established relationships between local, national, and global partners to bring life-changing opportunities to young lives."
Laura Slingsby, CEO of Salford Lads and Girls Club, described the magic of watching the young people's reactions throughout the evening: "From the size of the venue to the noise of the crowd, it was a new experience for many of them. One they'll remember for the rest of their lives."
She added, "Bruce was so lovely and spent his time chatting with the young people and answering some of the questions they had about his musical history. This is exactly what great work looks like. Creating the kind of moments that change lives, open doors, and let young people dream bigger."
